In August 2020, Instagram began a pivot to video, introducing a new feature called “Reels”. After scrolling through posts from the past 48 hours, Instagram displays posts related to their interests from accounts they do not follow. In February 2021, Instagram began testing a new feature called Vertical Stories, said by some sources to be inspired by TikTok.
As of November 2024 Reels average collectively 150 billion views a day, Creators earn money based on the amount of views they receive, or through ad revenue. Initially a purely photo-sharing service, Instagram incorporated 15-second video sharing in June 2013. The addition was seen by some in the technology media as Facebook’s attempt at competing with the then-popular video-sharing application Vine. Albums were introduced in February 2017, which allow up to 10 minutes of video to be shared in one post. In December 2017, Instagram began to allow users to follow hashtags, which display relevant highlights of the topic in their feeds.
Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly described it as a “wholesome and quick-witted” performance. When Affleck starred as a recently returned Korean War veteran in the coming-of-age drama Going All the Way (1997), Todd McCarthy of Variety found him “excellent”, while Janet Maslin of The New York Times noted that his “flair for comic self-doubt made a strong impression.” He and his brother, Casey, were surrounded by people who worked in the arts; the boys regularly attended theater performances with their mother and were encouraged to make their own home movies.
Affleck urged voters to “help make history” in a MoveOn.org campaign, and made several appearances during the 2008 Democratic National Convention. In the week of the presidential election, he appeared on Saturday Night Live to jokingly endorse Senator John McCain. Affleck did not actively campaign for Obama’s reelection in 2012, though he still supported him. During the Democratic National Convention in Boston, he spoke to many delegations, appeared on political discussion shows, and attended fundraising events. Affleck took part in a voter registration public service announcement, and traveled with Kerry during the opening weekend of his Believe in America Tour, making speeches at rallies in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio.

Suggested posts received more controversy after Fast Company stated that the feature would be impossible to turn off.
In 2013, Affleck and Garner hosted an event for lawmakers at their home in support of a bill that would protect celebrities’ children from harassment by photographers; their six-year-old daughter made a speech about her personal experiences. Garner also testified before the California Assembly Judiciary Committee in support of the bill, which later became law. Despite the legislation, photographers still regularly waited outside their children’s school and police assistance was sometimes required. In 2014, Affleck argued in favor of United Kingdom-style legislation that requires media outlets to blur children’s faces in published photos. He has said there are “real practical dangers” involved in paparazzi attention, citing Garner’s longtime stalker, Steven Burky, who was arrested in December 2009 while trying to blend in with paparazzi outside their daughter’s preschool. Burky was charged with two counts of stalking, to which he pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
The app automatically begins playing videos as soon as it is launched, which CEO Kevin Systrom contrasted to video hosts where one must first locate a video. In April 2024, Instagram announced that they would start testing new tools “within weeks” to fight sextortion, a form of blackmail involving intimate pictures sent online. On August 2, 2024, Turkey blocked Instagram after the platform deleted posts from users offering condolences for the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. In December 2024, Instagram and MTA collaborated and sold Metrocards ft. creators such as New York Nico, Overheard In New York, and SubwayTakes. In February 2023, Instagram introduced a new feature allowing users to browse and post GIFs in their comments.
Meta representatives replied that they were disappointed with the lawsuit and were hoping instead to continue working with other companies from the industry to create new and better standards for applications teens use. A few days after a fire incident that happened in the Koryo Hotel in North Korea on June 11, 2015, authorities blocked Instagram to prevent photos of the incident from being spread. On January 2020, after the Assassination of Qasem Soleimani by the United States, Instagram removed posts expressing support for General Soleimani. Like many social media sites, Instagram employs a combination of automated algorithms, user reports and human review to identify and remove illegal content such as child abuse and encouragement of terrorism.
When users receive a private message from someone they don’t follow, the message is marked as pending and the user must accept to see it. The feature received a major update in September 2015, adding conversation threading and making it possible for users to share locations, hashtag pages, and profiles through private messages directly from the news feed. Additionally, users can now reply to private messages with text, emoji or by clicking on a heart icon. A camera inside Direct lets users take a photo and send it to the recipient without leaving the conversation. A new update in November 2016 let users make their private messages “disappear” after being viewed by the recipient, with the sender receiving a notification if the recipient takes a screenshot.
In 2016, Affleck filmed an endorsement for Rezpect Our Water, an online petition to stop construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. Affleck appeared at a press conference with New York Senator Chuck Schumer in 2002, in support of a proposed Anti-Nuclear Terrorism Prevention Act. In 2003, he criticized the “questionable and aggressive” use of the Patriot Act and the resulting “encroachments on civil liberties”. In 2007, he filmed a public service announcement for Divided We Fail, a nonpartisan AARP campaign seeking affordable, quality healthcare for all Americans. Affleck was a longtime supporter of legalizing gay marriage, saying in 2004 that he hoped to look back on the marriage debate “with some degree of embarrassment for how antiquated it was”. Also that year, he remarked that it was “outrageous and offensive” to suggest members of the transgender community were not entitled to equal rights.
Also in February 2023, Zuckerberg announced that Meta would start selling blue “verified” badges on Instagram and Facebook. In April 2022, Instagram began testing the removal of the ability to see chicken road “recent” posts from various hashtags. This change became permanent and system wide a year later, and now hashtags can only be used to see a selection of curated content from “top” users. These changes are ostensibly an attempt to hinder the spread of misinformation, while Instagram has also repeatedly stated that hashtags do not help posts get views.
Rumors of a redesign first started circulating in April, when The Verge received a screenshot from a tipster, but at the time, an Instagram spokesperson simply told the publication that it was only a concept. However, unlike post likes, the user who posted a comment does not receive notifications about comment likes in their notification inbox. Instagram began development in San Francisco as Burbn, a mobile check-in app created by Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger. On March 5, 2010, Systrom closed a $500,000 (equivalent to $700,000 in 2024) seed funding round with Baseline Ventures and Andreessen Horowitz while working on Burbn. Realizing that it was too similar to Foursquare, they refocused their app on photo-sharing, which had become a popular feature among its users. While Affleck believes paparazzi attention is “part of the deal” of stardom, he has spoken out against photographs taken at his private residence and paparazzi interest in his children specifically, who he says became the “big money” draw for photographers waiting outside his home.
In October 2016, Affleck and Damon made a one-off stage appearance for a live reading of the Good Will Hunting screenplay at New York’s Skirball Theater. The superhero film Justice League, in which Affleck returned as Batman, was released in 2017. Zack Snyder stepped down during filming due to the death of his daughter, the replacement director Joss Whedon’s treatment of actors was the subject of complaints, and Affleck himself was struggling with addiction issues. The film drew mixed opinions from critics; Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter wrote that Affleck “looks like he’d rather be almost anywhere else but here.”
Affleck appeared in CinemAbility (2013), a documentary film which explores Hollywood’s portrayals of people with disabilities. He directed and starred opposite Gillian Anderson in the kidnapping thriller Animals while he and Damon will star as police officers in the crime thriller The Rip. He stepped down as director, writer and, ultimately, as the star of The Batman, saying he “couldn’t crack it” and no longer felt “passionate” about the story.
This new functionality showcases unseen Story Highlights at the end of the Stories tray, which is situated at the top of the feed. By doing so, users can easily access curated Stories from the past week that they might not have seen previously. Importantly, this feature will only display Story Highlights—curated collections of Stories saved by users—rather than standard Stories that disappear after 24 hours. Users will only be able to view these Highlights after they have gone through all current Stories in their tray, meaning that those who follow many accounts may find it challenging to see these updates. Since February 2017, up to ten pictures or videos can be included in a single post, with the content appearing as a swipeable carousel. The feature originally limited photos to the square format, but received an update in August to enable portrait and landscape photos instead.
